The rumor had spread of the arrival of a skateboarding colleague, he came with the nickname “Cohete” (Rocket in Spanish), coming from the Republic of Chile. I had the feeling that everything had already been planned in advance. I left by public transport towards the heart of the Angelino City, unaware of all the action that could take place during the next few hours, I did not want to surrender yet to the role of photographer or skateboarder, I felt that one of the 2 personalities would manifest with the surprise.
The meeting point was 110 Grand Ave. Los Angeles Superior Court. Upon arrival I discovered that more people had joined to skate, I found it very interesting to do it together, there seemed to be a force of tranquility like magic that flowed between us, each person present represented the channel through which said energy circulated.
A common activity attracted different people to coexist and also to document a staging of the skate culture even as amateurs in the industry, let’s say we showed the other side of the coin, that is, capturing how we wanted to define our authenticity, we had a flash of color as the sunlight progressed.
For a moment more skaters joined us, mostly teenagers, while the magic continued to flow I felt the desire to capture what was happening in front of me, I took my analog camera out of my backpack, I generally use it to do photojournalism and this was the ideal situation to use it since I have time to absorb the panorama, I rub my eyes because I seem to be dreaming, I see the environment in which I develop with ease, I’m happy to see a tree nearby, cooperate with us by providing a little shade and make the spontaneity of the events effective by organizing everyone present for the group photo, the beloved memory photo, an ancient tradition to treasure a moment.
During our exploration we crossed paths with fans of Los Angeles Lakers, they celebrated being crowned champions of their division, among crowds they chanted the name of Kobe Bryant dedicating the achievement to him, in reality it happened all over the city, for my creative side, it was stimulating, there was no limit to my imagination, those who came in the group and suddenly I saw in the distance, I would make them participate by helping me as a human tripod, that is, they were located with an external flash where I indicated, in addition to the fact that I was loaded with photographic equipment already coming on public transportation, it seemed sensible not to carry more than necessary and in this way we were all participants of the scene.
A true poetic act in all its glory. This event was titled “Good Weather”, a project organized and filmed by a colleague, Víctor Antillanca, also the creator of a movement called “Conception”.
Later I will talk to you in greater detail about Conception, I will also tell you what it proposes to do within the skateboarding culture.
