Creative Individuals

Guiri Reyes - Switch Heelflip

I received a text from my boy JT on a Saturday morning so we can go on a street mission. JT has been a very influential skater for the scene in Miami he was hanging out with Alvin who’s a photographer from New York and Guiri who is another photographer and skater as well.

First we met up at a park and Alvin let me test his medium format camera. From there we went to a bridge spot where there was a concrete barrier next to a street. At that spot Guiri did a 50-50 to 5-0 and then a Frontside 180 No-comply with a huge old school looking board. Guiri is a very talented skater and photographer. Then JT did a line under that same bridge. The whole time Alvin was taking some pictures using different cameras. We had different cameras that day. Guiri had a Canon and Alvin had a medium format old-school camera. It’s the first time I’m together with so many photographers and it wasn’t awkward at all.

After getting a couple of clips under the bridge we headed to another bridge spot where there was a bank. Guiri and JT were just dropping in from the top or at least trying to. Then Guiri decided to do a Kickflip down the bank, shit was gnarly.

Once we were done at that location we went into Wynwood and met up with Simon and Ana. The spot has closed fences, we had to slide under the fence to get in and there’s always a risk of cops showing up. Technically that’s trespassing. Which is crazy because in part I feel is the essence of skateboarding. The spot was awesome it was full of graffiti, there were paint cans everywhere, Guiri grabbed some spray paint and used it on his board.

Guiri noticed there was a spot with two doors and a good shadow he suggested we take some pictures there. They came out really sick. At that moment we played around with the sunlight and the shadows. And that became a whole skate sesh.

Guiri did a switch Ollie at a gap and was trying to Switch Heelflip over it but at the end we were too exhausted to continue, JT got a Kickflip at that gap.

I think it’s awesome how skateboarding can always bring you around such talented and creative individuals and we can all interact in such harmony, skateboarding is like art, you learn so much from others and not only skateboarding. I have learned a lot of good photography skills from other skaters who are either filmers, photographers or both.
